A Journey Shaped by Experience, Driven by Purpose
Growing up in a family of nine, I saw firsthand how poverty steals opportunities and forces children into hardships no one should endure. I lost my younger sister to an illness that could have been treated if basic healthcare had been accessible. I walked miles to school barefoot, carrying my books in a sack bag because a backpack was beyond our means.
Many of my friends never made it to the classroom, forced instead to hawk sachet water in dangerous traffic or sell in the markets to help their families survive. Some never made it home. Others vanished without a trace till this minute you are reading this. Many died from preventable diseases like malaria and typhoid, simply because they couldn’t afford medicine that cost less than a dollar.
Life was a constant struggle. We would go days, weeks, and sometimes even months without electricity. Streetlights were nothing more than a fairy tale, something we heard about but never experienced. At night, we relied on dim candlelight or kerosene lamps to study, knowing that education was our only chance at a better future.
Despite these struggles, my parents believed that education was the only way out in the part of the world where I came from. They prioritized learning, knowing that knowledge was the greatest gift they could give a child. But I also saw how many bright, hardworking children never got that chance. That was when I made a promise to myself:
“I do not have to be a billionaire like Bill Gates or Warren Buffett, who are doing good work around the world, to make a difference. If I can overcome these challenges, I will dedicate my time, resources, and the help of others to fighting poverty and the misfortune it brings.”
That promise led to the creation of Amaechi Foundation, a movement committed to education, healthcare, and sustainable solutions in rural communities.

There was a time when smallpox seemed impossible to eradicate, yet today, it exists only in history books. We believe poverty should follow the same path, defeated, eradicated, and remembered only as a lesson of the past. Just as the world united to eliminate smallpox, we can come together to break the cycle of poverty by providing education, healthcare, and sustainable solutions to the most vulnerable communities.
